Kimberlee Foster Coaching Newsletter Being with Messy
July 2006 | Issue #4

Greetings!

One year ago today, my beloved dog-companion of 14 years died. In honor of her beautiful spirit and the unique relationship we enjoyed, this issue is dedicated to Mook.

Aside from giving us opportunties to be "outside ourselves," animals provide us with tremendous health benefits and have much to teach us about being in the moment and loving unconditionally. My hope is that this issue will inspire, inform and delight you.

By now your summer must be in full swing: picnics, reunions, swimming, camping, picking berries. God knows the last thing we need is one more ezine to read ... or to write! So, next month I’m taking a break. Look for the next issue in early September.

Remember last month's "Toot Your Own Horn" section? Readers wrote in; check out their "toots" here!

To the animals!
Kimberlee

P.S. Thanks again to those who send great feedback ... and for those who don't, tell me: what would make this ezine more interesting and valuable to you?

    Feature Article
    by Kimberlee Foster, CPCC

Last January, while exploring a new hiking trail, I discovered a breathtaking view of the Pacific Ocean. It was obviously a great place to break for lunch and imbed a memory or two.

It wasn't long before I spotted 4 white paws flailing madly in the air (see above). Ahhh, the familiar sight of my darling new dog, Karli, rolling on her back - most likely in something deliciously odiferous.

She didn't disappoint me: a big ol' cow pie. I felt my heart sink, suddenly remembering why it was I didn't want to adopt a white dog. While contemplating the adoption return policy, I wondered how the heck a cow pie ended up in the middle of nowhere. Then I got distracted with my chocolate-laden GORP and returned to knoshing ... and Karli to her sniffing (or so I thought).

    Dogs as Healers & Teachers

Would you like to live a less stressful life, lower your blood pressure, and decrease your chances of developing depression? Would you like your children to be confident, empathetic, focused in school, and socially adept?

Many researchers agree that all of these positive life changes can be facilitated by dogs! Dog owners live longer after heart surgery, have lower rates of depression, and score higher on empathy tests. Just petting a dog for 10 minutes can lower your blood pressure!

    Who Says Animals Don't Feel?!

Since Waldo [3 y/o male Chihuahua] joined our family, poor Lambchop [Red Belly Parrot] is picking his feathers! He's ripped out almost all of his tail feathers and is doing a number on his pretty orange chest feathers.

So I took him to our friend who owns the bird store, to get her advice. She said basically he's sexually frustrated! He's angry at ME because I'm giving attention to the new male in the family and he sees himself as the alpha male that should be getting all the attention from me! I got some good tips for helping him adjust.

    What Good Are These Ezines?

Here’s a creative way one of my readers used information from my ezine to help her through a difficult moment. You can do the same.

“Yesterday and today I've been feeling in the pits, full of guilt, regret and sadness. I finally got that I could do something instead of waiting for things to get better all on their own...or not. I grabbed a couple of books, then remembered your past ezine and worked with "Getting out of your own way." I printed "Ingredients for Getting Out of Your Own Way" to post on my wall and made the 8 questions into a worksheet. I'm learning to proactively use the tools at hand!! YEA for me and THANKS to you.” – Jae Newman, Santa Rosa, CA
