    Feature Article

Do you know what this means, to "get out of your own way?" Well, call me a slow learner or a late bloomer but I didn't really get it until just recently.

I talk to a lot of people. I network. I ask questions. I feel energy. And within the last few months, I can think of 2-3 female entrepreneurs whose vibrant energy pulled me in like a bug to a light ... and you can bet I asked questions about that!

Turns out, they were suddenly making m0ney, clients were coming out of the woodwork ... they were happy, confident, peaceful. Life had turned a corner and they were cookin' with gas.

Like the infamous scene in When Harry Met Sally, I wanted what they were having! So, I asked one of my favorite questions: "What shifted for you?" And do you know what they all said? Get this! They said: "I got out of my own way!"

    Wellness Through Breathing

Breathing correctly is a foundational tool for restoring health and maintaining wellness in the human body, and one that has been given little attention in attempts by our health care system to focus strongly, more so now than ever, on preventative medicine. As we delve deeply into the world of mind-body medicine, it is essential that we renew and regenerate the physical body via natural foods and hydration, a balance of rest, work and play, and most importantly, the breath. Respiratory Education is a need whose time has come for the emerging individuals who claim wellness as their model in a new paradigm of health.

Dorisse Neale, RN, founder of BreathDance, Wellness Through Breathing, a small business which she has been running out of her home in Northern California since 1999, has committed her life to getting this message out to the world. Having been a nurse for almost 30 years, she discovered the Buteyko Breathing Method in 1998 when a friend sent her an article to read. A year and a half later, she wrote her first testimonial:

“Learning the Buteyko Breathing Method and practicing it has given me a sense of control over my life which I have never known until now. Having suffered from multiple episodes of acute and chronic asthma since infancy, I have been given about every treatment known, yet no one thing has affected me so profoundly as this simple breathing technique. I now have a tool I can use, without desperately grabbing for an inhaler.” ~ Dorisse Neale, RN, January 2000

Question: "Do you have any advice for people who work from home in terms of discipline, avoiding isolation, and self managing? Thanks! Nora"

Answer: This is a great question! It seems to be a top challenge for many of my entrepreneurial clients (and me too!). So I wrote up this list of tips that I have found helpful. I hope you do too!

11 Tips for Discipline, Avoiding Isolation, and Self-Managing

    1. Get clear on what you want to accomplish. Write a Personal Mission Statement or Prayer of Intention aligned with what you want to accomplish. Make it highly visible and read it every day. This will serve as your "guiding light" - the main reason you want to be focused in the first place! Important: State what you want in positive terms (i.e., "I want to work with others." vs. "I don't want to work alone.").
    2. Find Support. Create or join a support network (i.e., MasterMind Group, Strategic Alliances, Advisory Group, Special Interest Group). Be creative - think of what you need, what you enjoy, and who you like to be with! Then go find it!
    3. Plan Ahead. Take 15-20 minutes at the end or beginning of each day to list 2-3 tasks you'd like to accomplish that day (or the following day). Keeping the list short will reduce overwhelm, increase a sense of accomplishment and help you stay on track.

The American Society for Training and Development shows the likelihood of a person completing a goal breaks down as follows:

    • Consciously decide to adapt an idea: 25%
    • Decide when they’ll do it: 40%
    • Plan how they’ll do it: 50%
    • Commit to someone else they’ll do it: 65%
    • Attends regular accountability appointments with someone they commit to: 95% actually complete the goal!
